Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
