Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
