Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
