Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
