Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
