Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
