Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
