Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
