Be smart, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
