Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
