Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
