Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically.
