Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
