Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
