Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
