Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Plans: The Past of Craps

Be brilliant, play cunning, and discover how to play craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
