Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
