Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
