Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
