Master Craps – Pointers and Techniques: The History of Craps

Be clever, play smart, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
