Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
